Expired Certificate error…

May 20, 2008

When I try to install an application (E. g. theme, game, VPN client) to my Nokia device I get an error message: "Installation security Error. Unable to install" or "Certificate may yet not be valid, is expired or phone’s day settings may be incorrect"

If you get such an error message, please set the device date to before 12.6.2007 (or for some applications maybe even earlier), and then this error doesn’t appear and installation continues normally. After installation you may set date back to current date.

If this does not help then
TOOLS>APP MGR>OPTIONS>SETTINGS>SOFTWARE INSTALLATION and changed it from SIGNED ONLY to ALL.

How to change Cellphone N-Series Fonts

May 19, 2008

1. You need: A Nokia S60 3rd device, something to write, a cardreader or USB-cable and of course your computer.

2. At first download a explorer like Y-Browser or similar and install it on your device.

3. Then start your explorer and go to Z:/resource/Fonts

4. Now you need something to write. Write down exactly the names of all the fonts in this folder (nohindisnr60, S60ZDIGI, …)

5. Choose the font that you want on your device. It should be a *.ttf file. You can download fonts e.g. here. You can also take a file from your computer, if you use windows they´re all in C:\WINDOWS\Fonts

6. Make a new folder called “Fonts”, and copy the font you´ve chosen in this folder. Paste it as many times as you need it and rename it exactly like the names you´ve written down before (nohindisnr60, …)

7. Take out your memorycard or connect your device to the computer and choose data transfer.

8. Go to your memory card (E:\) and create a new folder called resource if it isn´t there yet.

9. Now copy the folder “Fonts” you´ve made before and paste it into the resource folder on your memory card.

10. Switch off your phone and put in your memorycard. Now turn on your phone again.

11. Congratulations, you changed the font on your device!

To reset the font, just turn off your phone, take out the memorycard and delete the folder “Fonts” on it. Put it in again and restart the phone.

!!!VERY IMPORTANT: Do NOT change the fonts on your phonememory (C:\), only on your memorycard (E:\)!!!

How Not to Get a Mobile Virus…

More in the news today about the source code for a Symbian based virus which spreads over Bluetooth. It’s availability is expected to make the virus more common among Smartphone users) Things like this are frustrating because you have to wonder what it is these virus writers are trying to achieve.

When it comes to Windows on your desktop, virus releases usually exploit gaping vulnerabilities in the OS, but when it comes to infecting a Symbian Smartphone, the success of an infection attempt depends entirely on the user; if the OS did any more to stop the virus installing itself, it would render the Smartphone locked down in the same way Microsoft Smartphones are, not letting you install anything that has not been approved by the ‘Powers that Be’.

Tips & Guide to dismantle your cellphone

May 14, 2008

Please note that this is a free resource available to anyone that finds it useful, and that’s the way we all want it to remain.  This site is for YOUR benefit - constructive criticism is always welcomed as are suggestions and content to improve the site (particularly on handsets not already covered).

This site will not try to sell you anything (apart from the stuff in the for sale part of the extras section) but is intended to show you just what can and can’t be done with some of the most popular mobile phones on the market today.  This has now changed a little - the demand for guidance on dismantling handsets has driven me to decide to drop virtually everything other than the dismantle guides

Try it on your own Risk…
